Richard is a comedian and an actor whose interests in music hall, silent film and variety have inspired much of his career switching from circus, West End musicals, opera and variety. He a regular at The Leeds City Varieties, Brick Lane Music Hall and The Player's Theatre in London both as an act and as Mr Chairman.
Richard, a proud member of The Grand Order of Water Rats, tours extensively with his unique array of speciality acts - from Halifax to Hong Kong and from Dublin to Dundee - seasons include: WOT A CARRY ON IN BLACKPOOL; THE RUSS ABBOT SHOW; THE BOBBY DAVRO SHOW; CANNON AND BALL, JOE PASQUALE’S KAK RAIDER TOUR, HAVE A LAUGH WITH BRADLEY WALSH and TWO OLD FARTS IN THE NIGHT with Barry Cryer and Willie Rushton as well as several ALADDINS, BABES IN THE WOODS, CINDERELLAS and countless tours with the celebrated HISS AND BOO MUSIC HALL COMPANY .
Richard appeared at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer, topping the bill in their legendary summer show (2000), and returned there in 2001 by popular demand. The following season he both directed and topped the bill at Clacton where he returned the following year - after compiling and directing Cromer! After Summer season Richard appeared in a new farce at The Theatre Royal Windsor, written and directed by Ray Cooney called TOM, DICK AND HARRY playing brother Harry opposite Joe Pasquale and Bradley Walsh.
Television work includes Troyboy (a pig!) in PIGSTY; LIFT OFF, IT'S WICKED! (Live!) and BODYTALK for Children's BBC and WEDNESDAY AT 8 and THE SOOTY SHOW for Thames. Richard also realized one of his dreams by playing a baddie (Urak) in the DR. WHO adventure TIME AND THE RANI. Film work includes several fleeting glimpses as one of Bob Hoskins' stunt doubles' in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT and earlier this year playing Peter Quince in Tangent Film’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM.
Richard began his career in the musical BARNUM with Michael Crawford at the Opera House in Manchester followed by a long run at the Victoria Palace in London and the BBC film version. Eight years later he returned to BARNUM for the National tour and another West End run playing the Ringmaster and taking over P.T.Barnum himself. Other theatre work includes: Dickon in a musical version of THE SECRET GARDEN at the King's Head Theatre, London; Sam Crow in FAT PIG - THE MUSICAL and OH WHAT A LOVELY WAR! both at the Leicester Haymarket; Tobias in David Toguri's production of Sondheim's ,SWEENEY TODD at the Bristol Old Vic; Puck in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and Tom in TOM THUMB at the Queen's Theatre Hornchurch; Leopold in English National Opera's DER ROSENKAVALIER at the Coliseum; Puck in Britten’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM at La Fenice Opera House in Venice and MANON at Covent Garden; the Parson in THE PARSON PIRATES which he wrote for Opera Della Luna and the national tour of CATS. He was the Circus Director and trainer for the musical LAUTREC at the Shaftesbury Theatre (taking over the role of Footit at the last minute), and played the comic fall-guy Lefou in the original cast of Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at the Dominion Theatre in the West End where he remained for the entire run ending up as stunt adviser and fight captain – a job he has repeated for ten shows in the West End.
In 2004/5 Richard joined the West End cast as Timon in Disney’s THE LION KING for a year before playing Cupid for the Breganz Opera Festival, Austria in MASKERADE which transferred to The Royal Opera House in London. He then spent his winter in Norwich playing the title role in PETER PAN – a pantomime he also wrote and directed.
